Skills Development
The overarching objective of this action is to expand and improve the basic vocational skills of refugees, IDPs and members of host communities for enhanced educational and economic opportunities, in particular for youth and women. The action is being implemented in the programme partner countries of Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
Jordan
Qudra’s skills development activities in Jordan focus on enhancing economic opportunities for both Jordanians and Syrians through vocational trainings that respond to the demands of the labour market. Vocational training courses particularly target young people, and seek to cater to women’s needs. The focus is on providing trainees with an accredited vocational training at a semi-skilled level, for example in the areas of construction, hospitality and mobile phone maintenance. The courses are complemented by life skills training and career counselling. In order to ensure high quality vocational education, training centres are equipped, curricula are adapted and the management as well as teaching staff are trained at the same time.
The training programmes are conducted in collaboration with local NGOs and public sector training providers. The programmes are usually short, lasting from one to three months, enabling the trainees to receive the necessary qualifications to quickly join the labour market. In addition, they are nationally accredited at the semi-skilled level, which provides the added bonus for Syrian refugees, enabling them to obtain a work permit. Before, during and after the training programmes, Qudra’s local partners assist the trainees to find work by providing career counselling and assisting in job placements.
As in Lebanon and Turkey, Qudra in Jordan ensures that the selection of training programmes corresponds to the labour market needs. Due to relatively restricted occupations for Syrian refugees, Qudra ensures that a large number of training programmes are in occupations that are open to refugees. Qudra also takes into consideration the specific needs of women and men by providing training programmes both in traditionally male and female occupations (such as garment production, food production and refrigerator maintenance), as well as in new fields that can easily be accessed by all (such as sales and marketing, and mobile phone maintenance).
Lebanon
Skills development activities in Lebanon focus on formal and non-formal short-term training measures for target groups with an overall aim to strengthen their resilience and contribute to their economic self-sufficiency. In close cooperation with well-established local NGOs and public training providers, tailor-made trainings are provided in various fields of profession – such as construction, agriculture, services and basic nursing – which correspond to the demands of the labour market. In this endeavour, training-of-trainers programmes are conducted and awareness about skills development and vocational training measures are enhanced.
Qudra Lebanon Brings Syrian and Lebanese Women Together for Basic Nursing Training
Qudra Lebanon, in cooperation with the Human’s Duty Foundation, have organised a basic nursing training activity addressed to 40 Syrian and Lebanese women. The training ran between 15 May and 15 August 2017 at Al Thabat Charity Association premises in Fih, Koura region of Lebanon. The women beneficiaries were instructed on basic nursing training, which included topics such as first aid, patients care, elderly support and supporting the diabetes patients and their families.
Turkey
In Turkey, Qudra aims to support Public Education Centres by offering training opportunities in methods for adult learning and out-of-school-youth to staff members. The centres are also to be equipped with the necessary means and know-how to offer trainings for refugees and locals in technical and / or professional and reconstruction skills, which will eventually increase their (self-)employment opportunities.
